Shandur (foyer table)
Inspired by the legendary Shandur Polo Festival, held high in the mountains of northern Pakistan, this work captures the spirit of one of the world’s most extraordinary sporting traditions. At an elevation of 3,700 metres, where the rugged landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan meets Chitral, the Shandur polo ground comes alive each summer with thunder of hooves, the thrill of the game, and a celebration of culture. The equestrian scene depicting intricate craft of marquetry, brings this exhilarating spectacle to life through a panoramic display of polo players and galloping horses, set against a warm, earthy green backdrop.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, the work celebrates patience, precision, and craftsmanship involved in translating a cultural narrative into a functional object. The timeless craft of marquetry imparts Shandur its distinctive identity, turning it into a canvas for storytelling and a tribute to the enduring polo traditions of northern Pakistan.
